5 easy tested ways to help you take control over your emotional state

Five Basics for Mental Health and Wellness

1 A healthful diet

  • Our brain has been the prime storage for all information that we know that is why we should always feed our brain. By eating a proper amount of food, especially the right foods, improves thought processes and brain function. Just like vehicles, we need fuel for us to be able to live each day. We can derive these “fuels” from fresh vegetables and fruits that are deep orange, red and dark for they are abundant in fiber, minerals, and vitamins.
  • Not only fresh vegetables and fruits can help our brain but also Omega-3 fatty acids that we get from fish like salmon and tuna. These fatty acids are present too in cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprout, scallops, green beans, strawberries, broccoli, walnuts and flaxseed. Omega-3 fatty acids are very important in enhancing brain function because it improves concentration and sleep, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the probability of depression and Alzheimer’s Disease hence, reducing the risk of stroke.
  • Furthermore, liquids are very important to our brain too.Drinking eight or more glasses of water a day and an occasional glass of red wine hydrates our body and gives antioxidants to our body respectively.

2 Adequate sleep

The best witnesses that can attest to the importance of sleep are the insomniacs. They are unable to sleep at night that leads to depression, irritability, and inefficient decision-making. Through sleeping, we are able to release accumulated stress and tension. The human body is designed to spend 1/3 of the 24 hours for sleep which is equivalent to 8 hours. If you are unable to give your body a nice sleep with such requirements, your body reserve will be depleted and brain functions suffer. On the other hand, when you give yourself more sleep than the required time, lethargy will come your way, hindering you to the next basic - exercise.

3 Regular exercise

Many people would think that exercise is synonymous to exhaustive exercises like a ride on your bike for 50 miles or a marathon. You can exercise by just walking briskly for 30 minutes. Studies have shown that this simple exercise can keep your weight checked, muscles toned, and a circulatory system well-functioning. The keyword for mental health and wellness, especially in exercise is MOVE. Make it a habit to exercise 30 minutes a day to make your brain and body fit.

4 Proper medical care

There are a lot of illnesses and diseases that would not show symptoms but are actually ruining our body. That is why, a check-up once every year and an age-appropriate lab test would be a great help in detecting things that might hinder mental health and wellness. Since all of us are different, it is advisable for some to visit doctors regarding serious or chronic conditions. The most common people with serious conditions that need check-ups from time to time are the diabetics, schizophrenics, and depressed.

5 Social-Emotional connections

It is not only the exercises, foods, and check-ups that would contribute to our own well being. We also need relationships to support our wellness. Those people who are physically active are those that have deeper friendly and intimate relationships because they are able to get out more and establish a physical and emotional connection with other people.

These are the five basics that would ensure your mental well being. As early as now, we should always take care of ourselves because if we do not, nobody else will.
